Kim Clarke continues to question former Harvard colleagues. No one knows why he left the elite clubs of the Ivy League for the halls of Brigham Young University-Idaho.
Henry J. Eyring Named 17th President Of Byu Idaho
But there is an explanation that Clark has worked with academic colleagues and members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
“Think of yourself when you got a call from Moses. That’s what happened. When President Gordon B. Hinckley called, we answered and said we’d be glad to.”
A former president of Harvard Business School, Clark resigned from his position after LDS Church President Hinckley asked him to take the reins at BYU-Idaho. But Clark has another reason for going to BYU-Idaho — a reason he says his East Coast teammates disagree with.

A combination of religion and focus on work prevented Clark from attending Harvard Business School. Two of his Harvard colleagues will attend BYU-Idaho this summer.
Clark Gilbert will become assistant vice president for student life at BYU-Idaho, leaving his position as an assistant professor at Harvard.
The transition may not mean much to some of his Boston colleagues, but Gilbert said he chose the position because of his work with inner-city youth in Boston. He wants to find ways to expand the path of knowledge. Gilbert added that he and his wife experienced an “unfathomable” answer to their prayers when they moved to Idaho.
Solved: Why Am I Still Part Of A Group From 2018?
Steven Wheelwright, a Harvard business professor, will join BYU-Idaho as a special assistant to the author after retiring from Harvard this summer. LDS leaders called Wright to his post as part of missionary service for the church.
Although BYU-Idaho covers some of Harvard’s talent, W. Rolf Kerr, chairman of the Church’s Educational Planning Committee, said the new hiring is not an attempt to make BYU-Idaho the Harvard of the West. In fact, Ivy League universities have little to do with recruiting requirements, he said.
Church leaders have been looking at these three people for a long time, Kerr said, and it’s time to do something about each of them.

“It’s just a mistake,” Kerr said. “It’s not about Harvard. It’s about very powerful people who have the time and talents necessary for the needs of the church. It’s no different than someone who comes from any other institution, or industry.”
However, the Harvard connection attracted the attention of Eastern scholars who were now interested in the Western institution that managed to hire three of Harvard’s leading professors.
“This is a clear sign of a great university with a unique educational model,” Kerr said. “Kim Clark has the skills that he brings, and the vision that he brings to the organization, it sends a great message about what the church expects there.”

Although word about Clark has drawn attention to BYU-Idaho, Clark believes the university will be an interesting one. Clark said about a year ago that the four-year-old building is in a “new phase of history.” When he first became president.
“Everything that has happened to me while I’ve been here has strengthened my awareness,” he said this week. “We’re seeing it boil down to teaching and learning on campus.”
Clark also promoted a number of new initiatives at the university, including changing the academic calendar to three 14-week semesters instead of four, and spring and summer terms of only eight weeks each.

The change is expected to add 3,500 more students each year to the 18,500 enrolled. Walkouts are the first step in attracting students to campus.
Clark also leads BYU-Idaho’s efforts to become a university for students. That focus will set the University of Idaho apart from other higher education institutions and serve as a model for other institutions, Clark said.
The school ended its intramural sports program, choosing to focus on classroom teaching. Clark also encourages more online learning and even retaking all required courses at BYU-Idaho.
