East Carolina runs a 3-3-5, and you can look at a fourth DL if you want. Chad Stevens has a one-handed EDGE rating of 261, playing next to a defensive pairing of lightweight Elijah Morris (264) and bigger D’Anta Johnson (294). Their backups are also very experienced, including giant NT Jason Shuford (6’4, 322), who I think will help on short ends and rushing downs. When you factor in rushing EDGE Jeremy Lewis, who is better than a passing running back, you have a unit that was very strong against top-5 offenses last season.
Of course, we’re talking about Michigan here, not your Gof5 offense. While Morris and backup JD Lampley have proven to be solid FBS football players, it’s hard to believe they can compete with Michigan’s big boys. Now, most ECU 3-3-5 teams want to DL, block and make their linebackers work. They can be annoying, but it’s hard to see them winning games.
It puts pressure on defenders, which is a weakness for pirates. The LB room was moved in the offseason, with some of the highest pass rushers in the FCS, rarely used players and one pass rusher from the P5. South Carolina’s BJ Davis and Taylor Jackson (the only returning LBs to log 100+ snaps last year) will likely start at WILL and MIKE, respectively, but I’m not sure how that’s set up. Those two players will have their baptism of fire tomorrow, but the same can be said for their backups. When ECU releases a rushing EDGE for a true SAM, it will be UNC transfer RaRa Dillworth, a former blue chip returning from the ACC who was phenomenal last season. If you’re DC Blake Harrell, you probably don’t feel good about giving these LBs a lot, but when you have 260-pound linebackers going up against Zach Zinter, you have no choice. This will not end well for your defense.

KEY MATCHUP: MICHIGAN’S IOL and low DT. We’ve seen this matchup many times over the past year, perhaps most famously at Nebraska. Michigan’s IOL goes against a team with a low DT and it usually blows the opponent out of the water up front. If it’s with ECU, Blake Corum and Donovan Edwards could get big returns given the state of their LB room.
If Michigan wants to push JJ McCarthy and show that their offense will be a bigger offense in 2023, this game will be a great opportunity to do it. ECU struggled to produce that many sacks last season, and their secondary was completely absent in the offseason. Although some receivers are broken, the home team should have no problem moving the ball against the Pirates’ pass defense tomorrow.
The same defensive front mentioned in the previous section was very solid last season. Didn’t do much to create a rush. The team ranks in the middle of the sacks and the FBS, but the truth is even worse: PFF ranks it 125th in tackles for loss. For example, Jeremy Lewis, their EDGE rusher, is a much better player against the run and doesn’t offer too many pass rushers, but that’s the primary responsibility of his mixed role. Best passer among EDGEs last season. They could drop their LBs and DBs like a 3-3-5 defense, but I don’t see much potential for an organic transition. In a way, this will be a good first litmus test for Michigan’s struggles, as it will be a very bad sign if ECU is under pressure organically.
As for the secondary, ECU is moving two starting safeties in Teagan Vilkas and Julius Wood. They rotated with a third safety last season, so this won’t be their first rodeo. The bad news is that the cornerbacks are fresh off losing their top four cornerbacks from last season. Shavon Revel, a former JUCOer, could be among the many other players who could start at one corner outfield. Isaiah Brown-Murray is only 5’9″ and redshirted last season, so good luck with his plans. Other options also move FCS up and P5 down. The ECU will use too many (all?) corners on its journey tomorrow. The big house will have its first real dose of FBS action. Decent rebound cabinets can help, but they won’t help much.
MAIN MATCH: IN FIVE SECONDS FIRST STUDENT WRs vs PATCHWORK GROUP. Let’s be real here. Michigan’s starting WRs will probably carry these guys, especially with McCarthy getting plenty of time to throw. The goal of this game is to see players move down the depth chart, and we’ve heard a lot of good things about Michigan’s freshman in camp, who promises to play in the opener. Let’s pit them against this hodge-podge DB group!

ECU was raided after spring practice at the Olympics (shouldn’t the Pirates be raided?) and as a result their blocking situation will probably be much worse than it could have been. After all the smoke cleared, the wreckage of the sunken pirate ship revealed only one returning OL starter in RG Isaiah Foote. Transfer OL injury changed some things ($), but the OL line for ECU will have a decent USF transfer (Dustin Hall), last year’s sixth rounder, former walk-on, RS Fr, followed by Foote. Ah ha.
East Carolina’s OL ranked in Football Outsiders’ top 100 in various blocking metrics last season, so this group could be a lot worse. It will be surprising if they get any push against Michigan’s incredible defensive interior, as well as EDGE players who excel against the run. All that being said, I think it’s time to say a few prayers for the safety of their runners.
These backs will fill the big hole left by star RB Keaton Mitchell, and it looks like it will be some kind of tandem that gets the job done. These players were below Mitchell last season and likely lack the mental escapism needed to have a big day if their blockers are fed crocodiles.
