When Does Spring Start?
Many people speculate that the four seasons occur because the Earth is closer to the Sun in the summer (so it is hotter) and then further away from the Sun in the winter (so it is colder). This is wrong.

When the Earth is closer to the Sun, the star’s gravity is slightly stronger, causing our planet to move slightly faster in its orbit. For us in the Northern Hemisphere, this results in a shorter fall and winter because we are moving faster through space this time of year. Conversely, when the Earth is farthest from the Sun, it moves more slowly, resulting in longer spring and summer seasons. (The opposite is true in the southern hemisphere.)
In other words, it takes Earth less time to travel from the autumnal equinox to the vernal equinox than it does to travel from the spring to the autumnal equinox.
