Ibm Internship Changes Student’s Career Plans
Believe it or not, it’s time to prepare your application for an internship at IBM Quantum next summer.
This year, we welcomed nearly 150 people to IBM Quantum and IBM Quantum-sponsored summer internships and workforce development programs. These include our flagship IBM Quantum Internship Program, Quantum Undergraduates at IBM and Princeton. UCLA, and the Qubit Early Quantum Career Immersion Program by Qubit – which is new this year.
Highlights of this summer’s IBM Quantum Internship Program include Kiskit Global Summer School 2022: Quantum Simulations; internal field trips to New York City and San Francisco; poster sessions, and an internal breakout event at the IBM Thomas J Watson Center in Yorktown Heights, NY; and a fireside chat with Jay Gambetta hosted and moderated by IBM Quantum intern. Read more about how IBM Quantum interns have contributed significantly to how we are expanding the IBM Quantum Roadmap to anticipate the future of quantum-core supercomputing. The development roadmap helps us scale quantum technology and build an open quantum software ecosystem.

So, with the 2023 internship season gearing up, what does it take to become an IBM Quantum intern? We asked some of this year’s interns what best prepared them for an internship at IBM Quantum.

Vivica, who worked under IBM Quantum creator Suzy Kirshner and head of marketing Christine Wu, wanted to remind applicants that you don’t need a strong quantum background to be a successful intern on the team. Instead, it’s important to be aware of IBM’s role in the quantum space and take a keen interest in the work. She was eager to let people know what she wanted to get out of the internship process so that she could develop her video production and writing skills.
Abir, who worked on Kiskit Metal, is a first-of-its-kind open source project to make it easier for engineers and scientists to design superconducting quantum devices. to begin Kiskit metal team, he was able to gain experience crucial to his application by working on individual projects – and he was also a Kiskit advocate. He emphasized that inclusive experiences can set you apart, but you can also learn where your own interests and experience fit with the team and the larger company.

Ultimately, Arik, who worked on the quantum engineering team, fell in love with quantum after participating in the IBM Quantum Challenge. He did additional challenges, read a textbook, and researched the Developer Advocate Program—something he felt was important to his application. The internship was finally an opportunity to challenge myself. His previous experience was in hardware, but he was able to get hands-on experience with another aspect of quantum computing: algorithm design.

IBM Quantum is looking to hire an intern to work on Quantum Education. The applicant must have a strong academic background in quantum computing and quantum mechanics, as well as demonstrated scientific communication skills and interest. This intern will assist in the creation of educational content, including, but not limited to: Kiskit YouTube content, Kiskit challenge content, and summer school curriculum.
