Ben Rector began his career writing songs and touring in his Honda Accord on weekends. In March 2020, the principal found himself at home and at the piano. The alchemical big questions of life, more time than he’s had in a decade, and the now-very familiar “I’ve Never Seen It Before” have resulted in a career-defining album: The Joy of Music. The project includes a stunning short film (in which seven songs come to life with stunning cinematography) that invites listeners and viewers to visit a dream world, sharing Rector’s creative process and documentation of his work as an artist. He completes the film’s chapters under the direction of his new friend Joey, the Muppet monster he created with Jim Henson’s Creature Shop.
In this dreamlike setting, we see and hear how the principal overcomes overwhelming fear and rediscovers the joy of music through dancing and singing. Numerous late night and morning TV appearances, including Conan, The Today Show, Jimmy Kimmel, Living With Kellyanne Ryan, Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, and as a celebrity mentor on American Idol with Ryan Ted, Jewel Aldean, Brian McKnight, Jason Aldean and others. His albums have topped several Billboard charts, with his last two albums reaching #1 on Billboard’s US Folk Chart and #1 on Billboard’s US Rock and US Indie charts. two. Rector has built a unique touring base, regularly selling out at theaters and amphitheaters across the country, including three nights in a row at Nashville’s legendary Ryman Auditorium.
Clyde Lawrence and Grace Lawrence began writing songs as children, listening to countless Stevie Wonder, Randy Newman and Aretha in their New York apartment Records of Franklin. After years of working together, they officially formed Lawrence, an eight-piece soul-pop band made up of childhood and college musicians. Since then, the band has garnered a loyal following for its high-energy, keyboard-driven sound, tight, energetic horns, and explosive lead vocals.
