Michigan Winter 2023 – Now let’s just look at the winter months of December, January and February. Later we can come back and look at the marginal months of November, March and April.

The new forecast, released on August 18, 2022, is linked to the idea that La Niña is expected to continue through this winter before declining to near-normal water temperatures next spring. La Niña is when a large area of the surface waters of the Pacific Ocean is colder than usual for an extended period of time. In other words, it is a large drop of cold water that extends across the equator, across the Pacific Ocean. This drop of cold water affects the jet stream around the Northern Hemisphere, especially in winter.

The precipitation forecast is the most definitive part of the Michigan winter forecast. NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center believes there will be an area of above-normal precipitation that will stretch from Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio north to Lower Michigan. The best chance for above normal precipitation is in southern lower Michigan from Sturgis to Coldwater to Jackson to Ann Arbor and the Detroit area.

NOAA appears to indicate that a southwest to northeast storm track is expected in the Ohio Valley. Storm systems that follow this track often place southern Lower Michigan in the heaviest snow area on the northern side of the storm track.

The rest of Lower Michigan has a slightly increased chance of above-normal precipitation compared to the 30-year precipitation average.

We might have an active storm track, but will it be mostly snow or rain? The temperature forecast shows that NOAA is definitely not favoring either colder than normal or warmer than normal temperatures. Although forecast details suggest we have an equal chance of a cold, normal or warmer winter, this usually means a winter with near-normal temperatures.

World Of Winter

Near-normal temperatures in December, January and February mean snow will mostly fall from winter storm systems, even in far southern Lower Michigan.

Next, the forecast says Lower Michigan could have a snowier-than-average winter with near-normal average temperatures. Obviously we know that normal temperatures here are cold in winter. If the forecast is confirmed, temperatures would not be extremely, abnormally low.

The first step to having what Michiganders call a “real winter” is getting a lot of rain. The latest forecast tends to set us up for this real winter.

Filled with snow and ice sculptures, music and outdoor sports, the Michigan Tech University Winter Carnival celebrates the incredible amount of snow in the Keweenaw. Although the event has grown significantly since its inception in 1922, it remains the Copper Country’s premier winter event.

Organized entirely by Blue Key National Honor Society technology students, the Winter Carnival is a unifying experience that literally crosses generations. The experience of building snow statues, admiring frozen creations on campus, relaxing and being silly with friends has been happening for over a hundred years!

Its multitude of events and the promise of snowy masterpieces are reason enough to set your sights on a trip to the Keweenaw. Add ideal conditions for many other outdoor adventures, a thriving food and shopping scene, and you have the recipe for an unforgettable winter vacation! Now, if you want to know how to experience Winter Carnival in a way that our MTU engineering ancestors would be proud of, follow along.

Each year, the Winter Carnival has a different theme, and the students’ snow sculptures are created to embody that theme. This year’s theme is: “Delicious food for winter moods”. So, be on the lookout for some fantastic snow statues! The morning after All Night, you’ll see the judges visit each statue, judging it according to different criteria. Judging criteria include: first impression, statue title, lettering, artistic value, complexity, proportions, apparent effort, originality of the Winter Carnival theme, snow white and clarity of the statue.

Although Winter Carnival is a multi-day event, All Night is all about the night. In the late afternoon, the students and organizations creating their pièce de résistance in the snow were given one last chance to finish and perfect their statue. The energy and activity on campus and throughout Shelden Avenue is electric. The sounds of students working and encouraging each other, laughter and loud music.

Winter Weather Forecast

It’s an amazing time to walk around campus and witness the work and skills students use to build these statues. Carving techniques have evolved over the years and it is fascinating to see how a rough piece of snow is transformed into a work of art. All I will say is that I am iron.

You’ll find plenty of other attractions to keep the energy and spirits high for everyone involved. An annual favorite, the snow and ice DJ booth is ready to play some music and maybe throw some cool moves in your parka and winter pants! Blast some tunes with MUB during an all-night karaoke session and warm your tummies with a ton of pancakes at the ROTC Pancake Fundraiser!

The next day’s All-Nighter will showcase the statues to their fullest – we recommend starting your trip to see them all at Rozsa, walking around campus, on Shelden Ave, and don’t forget the fraternities at Hancock!

The highlight of the winter carnival is a tour of the campus and surrounding communities to see impressive snow sculptures designed by Michigan Tech students.

This is also the perfect opportunity to stroll through downtown Houghton and Hancock and explore the ice sculptures and Winter Carnival banners painted by student organizations. Guys, don’t let the name fool you. This is no simple version of your Uncle Larry’s favorite outdoor pastime. We’re talking human bowling on ice. It’s like taking your friends on ice! Head to Dee Stadium to watch students put their friends on an ice sled to knock down as many cones as possible.

Is it really winter if the sweep hasn’t happened yet? Broomball – literally a version of hockey played with a broom and a ball – began as a winter carnival event in 1950. The sport has grown significantly and enjoys a large number of players and ardent fans. People who drive on US-41 through the MTU campus have probably seen the ice rinks in the winter, so this is a great opportunity to watch sports. The games will be played during the Winter Carnival and the Alumni vs Student game is available for registration!

The Bigfoot Glowshoe is a fun snowshoeing event at Michigan Tech Trails. This year it will be bigger and better than ever, with tons of shiny accessories as well as lighting along the course. Plan ahead and dress up in your best awesome outfit! The Michigan Tech Outdoor Adventure program will provide snowshoes and snacks, which are included in the registration fee. This is a great winter family activity for everyone!
