State law requires students in grades 1 through 11 to have at least 165 school days. Minneapolis elementary schools have 170 school days on the school calendar, meaning they don’t have to make up classes if the strike lasts five days or less. (The update comes on the fourth day of the strike, with the two sides still more than $100 million away from reaching a settlement.)
Most seventh- and eighth-grade schools, as well as some middle schools, do not have extra time on their calendars, the district said. In these schools, all school days canceled due to the strike will have to be made up at a later date.

Midland Public Schools students begin the 2021-22 school year. If the school board approves the draft calendar agreed upon by the school district and the teachers union and released Tuesday, it will be implemented in the third week of August and before Memorial Day.

According to the draft calendar, school will begin on Monday, August 23, 2021, one week earlier than in 2020.
Term 1 ends on Wednesday 22nd December (last day before winter break) and Term 2 starts on Monday 3rd January 2022 when students return from break.
MPS director Michael Sharow said future MPS calendars will also be based on this, unlike the previous model which ended the first period in mid-January.

“There are two reasons (for the schedule change),” Sharo said. “Both are about what a better education means for a child.
“Most of our children go back to school in the first or second week of August,” he said. “So we thought, why not start the education part (of the school year) earlier as well. We’ve made that argument to the state legislature for years. That’s why they gave us the flexibility to start school before Labor Day.” .
As for making the term earlier, the school’s principal said it would make more sense to hold term exams earlier, rather than after a long winter break.

“Take two weeks off, then go to school for eight days and then sit for exams (before the holidays),” Sharrow said.
He noted that the first semester lasts 83 days and the second semester lasts 97 days, that is a total of 180 days and 1098 hours of classes, which is also a national requirement.
“The first period was shorter by a few days, but the second period was full of state tests. So it’s a good thing for teachers,” Sharrow said.
