Winter 2023 Most of the United States will be colder than normal this winter, although summer 2023 will be mostly warm.
What forms the climate? Recently, the 24-day cycle showed the lowest level of solar activity in more than 100 years. We are now at the beginning of cycle 25, which is expected to peak in July 2025 and bring little activity, meaning that average surface temperatures are cooler than historically. In addition to a weak El Niño, there will also be significant climate impacts. These include the continuous warm phase of the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO), the neutral to positive North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO), and the negative Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO). The oscillation is associated with ocean-atmosphere patterns that can have long-term effects on climate.
The upcoming winter will be “wet and mild”, with more precipitation (mostly) and temperatures several degrees above normal. In particular:
