The Imperial Garden, the Summer Palace, is a “masterpiece of Chinese landscape garden design” (UNESCO). The palace is famous for its horticultural techniques that combine man-made buildings and the natural landscape. UNESCO listed it as a World Heritage Site in 1998. After two years of looting and destruction, it is now the largest existing imperial garden in China. Although the palace has been repaired, some beautiful parts of the landscape are still missing.

With an area of 293 hectares (724 acres), the palace complex contains over 3,000 garden buildings of various shapes and can be roughly divided into three functional areas. The administrative area centered on the Hall of Benevolence and Longevity was where Empress Dowager Cixi and Emperor Guangxu held imperial meetings and received guests. Behind the administrative block, you’ll find the living area with three large siyuan (courtyards with houses on four sides). The recreation area mainly composed of Longevity Hill and Kunming Lake is for sightseeing. During the Qing period, the Garden of Clear Waves (the original name of the Summer Palace) contained a rich collection of literary and artistic works, with approximately 40,000 registered items. After being looted by French and British troops in the 1860s, only about 530 ruins remain, most of which have collapsed. Later, Empress Dowager Cixi renovated the Summer Palace and greatly enriched the park’s collections. The collection number again reached 40,000 after the founding of the People’s Republic of China. These collections cover almost all categories of Chinese heritage, as well as relics from other countries, including bronzes, porcelain, wood, calligraphy and painting, lacquerware, old books, clocks, bamboo, original carvings and musical instruments.
You may need at least half a day to explore all the hidden corners and main attractions of the palace. There is much to see and enjoy. One of the best ways to explore the gardens is by boat tour. A boat ride on Kunming Lake covers three-quarters of the Summer Palace grounds and offers views of most of the scenery. Along the lake, there is the longest covered wooden boardwalk in the world. This walk is an art gallery where you can see paintings of flowers, birds and other ornaments.
Boat tours are offered between April and October. This is the best time to visit the Summer Palace (except major holidays) for a boat sightseeing tour on the beautiful Kunming Lake. If you go in spring or autumn, you will enjoy the most comfortable weather in Beijing, neither too cold nor too hot. The Summer Palace is also a great place to relax in summer, so many people like to visit it during the season and take a walk along the promenade. Otherwise, the gates to the palace complex are open year-round, but during the winter months the lake freezes over and weather conditions are not so pleasant for exploring the gardens. The Old Summer Palace (Chinese: Yuanming Yuan) is a complex of palaces and gardens from the Qing Dynasty. The palace brings together the essence of Chinese garden art and integrates Western and Eastern architectural styles. Many landscape architects consider it to be the greatest work in the history of Chinese Golden Art. In its heyday, it was known as the “Garden of Gardens”. Even the famous French writer Victor Hugo described it as one of the wonders of the world.

In the 19th century, this magnificent royal garden contained some 1,000 palaces, nearly 100 views and countless treasures, all spread over an area of 350 hectares (865 acres). However, now you can only see the remains of the palace. In 1860, French and British troops occupied Beijing and reached the Old Summer Palace. They looted, burnt and destroyed the royal compound. The palace was so large that it took 4,000 men and three days to burn it down.
In the spring, usually between April and May, Beijing hosts the annual Spring Tour Festival at Yuanming Yuan Ruins Park. The festival brings back the culture and history of the Qing Dynasty through various exhibitions. You can also enjoy the spring flowers of peach, begonia and peonies at that time.
Lotus blooms from mid-June to mid-August. There are more than 300 different types of lotus in the Old Summer Palace, and the lotus plantation area is more than 65 hectares (160 acres). You can also see lotus flowers from hundred-year-old seeds found during archeological work in 2017. Seeds that had been dormant for over a hundred years blossomed in the summer of 2019.
