Farewell Tours: When Rock Stars Said Goodbye
Phish is an American rock band formed in 1983 in Burlington, Vermont. The band is known for musical improvisation, extended jams, bleeding edge and a devoted fan base. The group consisted of guitarist Terry Anastasio, bassist Mike Gordon, drummer John Fishman, and keyboardist Paige McConnell, who all performed vocals, with Anastasio on lead vocals.
Anastasio, Gordon, Fishman and guitarist Jeff Holdsworth, who joined McConnell in 1985, formed the band. Holdsworth left the band in 1986 and the line-up remained stable thereafter. Fish began performing outside the neophyte in the late 1980s and increased in popularity in the mid-1990s. In October 2000, the band began a two-year hiatus that ended in December 2002, but broke up again in August 2004. Phish officially reunited in March 2009 for a reunion show in October 2008 and have performed regularly since then. All four members pursued solo careers or worked with side projects, and these projects continued after the band’s reunion.
The band was part of a movement of improvisational rock groups inspired by the live performance format of the Grateful Dead and known as “jam bands”, which gained considerable popularity as concerts in the 1990s.

Phish has built a large and dedicated following through word of mouth, live recording exchanges, and more than 8 million albums and DVDs in the United States.
Phish was signed to major label Elektra Records from 1991 to 2005, where the band formed its own independent label, JEMP Records, to release archival CD and DVD sets.
Phish was formed in 1983 at the University of Vermont (UVM) by guitarists Terry Anastasio and Jeff Holdsworth, bassist Mike Gordon, and drummer Jon Fishman. Anastasio and Fishman met in October, when Anastasio called Fishman into his dorm room playing drums and asked if he and Holdsworth could jam with him.

Gordon met the trio shortly after, when Anastasio answered a wanted ad for a bass guitarist posted around the university.
The new group played their first concert at the University of Vermont’s Harris Mills cafeteria on December 2, 1983, where they played a set of classic rock covers, including two Griff Dead songs.
The group held one more concert in 1983 and did not perform again for nearly a year after Anastasio was suspended from the university after falling out with Fred.

After the prank, Anastasio returned to his hometown of Princeton, New Jersey and reconnected with his childhood friend Fred Tom Marshall. The pair began writing songs and collaborating on recorded material that appeared on Bevovic’s demo tape.
Anastasio returned to Burlington in late 1984 and continued to perform with Gordon, Holdsworth and Fishman. The quartet originally changed their name to Phish and played their first concert under that name on October 23 of that year.
Band members have given several different origins for Phish’s name. In Parker Potterbaugh’s 2009 book Phish: The Biography, the origin is given as a variation on phshhhh, an onomatopoeia for the sound of a brush on a snare drum.

In the official 2004 documentary Beauty Model, Anastasio’s band is also named after Fishman, which is named “Fish”.
In a 1996 interview, Fishman expressed regret at giving the band his name and said that the onomatopoeic inspiration behind the name was the sound of an airplane taking off.
Keyboardist Paige McConnell met Phish in early 1985, arranging for them to play a spring concert at Goddard College, the small university she attended in Plainfield, Vermont.

He soon began performing as a guest with the band and made his live debut on May 3, 1985 during the third set at UVM’s Redstone Campus.
In the summer of 1985, Fish was given a short break when Anastasio and Fishman vacationed in Europe. At this point, McConnell offered to join the band permanently and traveled to Burlington to learn their repertoire from Gordon.
Phish performed with a five-piece lineup for about six months after McConnell’s involvement, during which Holdsworth left the group in March 1986 following a religious conversion.

At Goddard College, Fish began working with fellow students Richard “Nancy” Wright and Jim Pollock.
Polk and Wright were musical collaborators who made experimental recordings on multi-track cassettes and were introduced to Fish by McConnell, who shared a radio program with Polk on WGDR.
Phish covered several of Nancy’s songs during their set, including “Holy Comet”, “I Don’t Know” and “Dear Mrs. Reagan”, the latter of which Nancy and Pollack co-wrote. In his book Heads: A Biography of Psychedelic America, music journalist Jesse Jarnow notes that Wright and his music greatly influenced Phish’s early style and experimental sound.
Bonnaroo Rumor And Confirmation Thread
Wright happily ended his association with Phish in 1989, but Pollack continued to work with Phish for several years, designing some of their album covers and concert posters.
In 1985, the group formed with Burlington luthier Paul Languedoc, who originally built custom instruments for Anastasio and Gordon.
Since then, Languedoc has designed exclusively for both, and his design and traditional wood selection have given the fish a unique instrument identity.

In the late 1980s, Phish began playing regularly at the Nectar Bar and Restaurant in downtown Burlington, and by March 1989 had performed several concerts at various venues.
The band’s 1992 album A Picture of Nectar was named after bar owner Nectar Roris and featured his face painted orange on the cover.
As his capstone project for Goddard College, Anastasio released The Man Who Stepped Yesterday, a nine-song progressive rock concept album that marked Phish’s second studio experience.
