It’s never too early to talk about the return of college football. At the same time, the Scarlet Knights have a lot of questions to answer between now and September, starting with the quarterback position.

Northwestern is near the bottom of the Big Ten and Rutgers needs to avoid a Week 1 upset.

Temple has become a staple of the Rutgers schedule. This will be the third year in a row that the two have met – and the first two were very different.

This game can go either way. Virginia Tech will likely see this as a can’t lose game early. Rutgers has it. A chance to go 3-0 and win the Power Five. The mental battle is this: Do we want to believe that Rutgers can play 60 minutes against Virginia Tech? As we sit here in May, let’s be skeptical and think more about this game over the next four months.

The Big Ten’s second tournament of the year and the first of four road games will take place in the Big House. Remember when Rutgers beat Michigan 17-14 last season? Or steal a win in 2021 with the Scarlet Knights’ late possession in Ann Arbor? Let’s not get ahead of ourselves. Jim Harbaugh led Michigan to the top spot in the nation. J.J. McCarthy is back and the defense will be strong again. The gap is too big.

After a potential loss to Michigan, the Scarlet Knights will return home with a chance to make amends. Wagner came to Rutgers last season and went 66-7. There is no reason why the result will not be the same in 2023.

Rutgers has not been favored in some road games this season. Madison hopes Luke Fickell can lead the Badgers back to the top of the Big Ten. They can’t beat Rutgers to make that happen. Braelon Allen brings toughness to a team that can win in the trenches and dominate physically.

Michigan State’s game has given Rutgers a lot of hope in recent years. Schiano won the Spartan’s first game. The Scarlet Knights were one point away on the road last season. Of course, Kenneth Walker III and Jalen Naylor dominated this game. Peyton Thorne transferred to Auburn. Mel Tucker et al. Struggled last season. This is a winnable game for the Scarlet Knights. The next two matches should split the minimum.

As always, Rutgers has four games on its schedule that seem impossible (more or less) to win. And as always, Ohio State is there. C.J. Stroud, Jackson Smith-Njigba may be gone, but the Buckeyes are reloading. We have seen this over the years. Kyle McCord will likely be the quarterback, and Marvin Harrison Jr. has a chance to be the best quarterback in the country. The odds are high.

Jack Campbell and Riley Moss are gone, but Iowa defends no matter what. The offense was historically bad last season and they fixed that this offseason by bringing in Cade McNamara. The Hawkeyes are hoping the Michigan transfer can provide some spark and experience on offense. It’s hard to see Rutgers scoring many points in this game.

There are some teams that don’t mesh well. Rutgers obviously lost to Ohio State and Michigan, but Penn State was a real stumbling block and the Nittany Lions seem to dominate Rutgers. Last season, Rutgers scored in double figures for the first time against Penn State. a problem? Penn State scored 55 runs. Here again, the gap between talent and physical ability is huge.

In terms of major schedules, Maryland and Rutgers have to play in the season finale every year. That seems to be the case. The Terps have been on a different level than Rutgers the last two years. The Scarlet Knights won an overtime game in 2020, but haven’t come close in the last two years. Once again, Rutgers enters the final week of the season in search of a safety.

The annual Scarlet-White game will take place at 3 p.m. at SHI Stadium. Membership and parking are free. This is a great opportunity for fans to see the 2023 team up close.
