Long-term shopping continues into the new year, as the focus shifts more to clothing and accessories than quick thrills. As Heather Gramston, head of womenswear at Browns, notes, “2022 is arguably the year to dress sexy and go out again,” a sentiment that has led to an increase in exclusive party wear with timeless appeal, as well as luxury rentals.

So what can we expect in 2023? According to buyers, the fashion crowd is divided into two groups: those who embrace a clean look in Spring/Summer 2023 and those who take the minimalist route with maxi seams and elegant tailoring. On TikTok, Gen-Z continues to feed an appetite for all things 1990s and 2000s, and the vintage market continues to grow.

It goes without saying that jeans and oversized shirts — the most Googled clothes of the year — are as modest as they come, according to Google’s Search of the Year report. Kate Moss’ jeans, tank top, and plaid shirt turns at Bottega’s Spring/Summer 2023 show instantly had us rooting for the basics (her “denim” was actually made of trompe l’oeil leather).
A unique everyday shoe to say yes to this year? Ballet pumps, which are a breakout hit (see Miu Miu’s satin pair). “Ballet flats are here to stay as our customers look for stylish styles to complement their hybrid lifestyles,” says Wiggins. Meanwhile, Fanny Moizant, co-founder of resale site Vestior Collective, expects stylish flats to dominate the vintage market.
According to experts, the best pieces to invest in transcend trends and stand the test of time. “We’re seeing a shift in the way our customers shop, moving away from trends and instead looking for luxury goods at democratic prices that serve as long-term investments,” explains Wiggins.

Sarah Maggioni, head of womenswear at WGSN, says fluid won’t feature in stereotypical “borrowed-from-the-boys” silhouettes this year. “It’s about thinking beyond boxy and oversized styles and instead considering flexible fits and adjustable sizing, with smart design details, from adjustable straps and fasteners to suit different body sizes and shapes, to extra stretch options for smart jersey wear,” he says. “It’s also about going back to the drawing board and looking at design considerations like inseams, armholes and shoulder widths, strategic subtle darts for soft volume that flatters all genders; it’s also important to invest in technology to get the style right, like 3D design and scanning.”
Expanded offerings from Miu Miu and Simone Rocha – launching authentic menswear this season – as well as the sophisticated designs of Luar’s Raul Lopez and Ludovic de Saint Sernin focus on fluid fashion. “Fashion seems to be moving away from gender stereotypes,” says Margaux Warin, Tagwalk’s director of fashion and insights.
Lace up your DMs, grunge is back in the mainstream. The shows gave way to sexier, more grown-up versions of grungy staples: undone knits, stuffy ties and tartans were on the agenda. Maggioni cites the “emotional rollercoaster and confusion that the collective has been experiencing lately” as the driving force behind grunge 2.0, which is more romantic this time around. The look is also settling into a vintage room. Moizant predicts a lot of denim, utility pants, leather and chains.

“Less is more,” explains Tiffany Hsu, vice president of womenswear, kidswear and lifestyle buying at MyTheresa. “Sex 2.0 [at the shows] was full throttle, with every imaginable iteration of microminis, cut-outs, sheer and mesh,” admits Gramston.
Searches for cut-out and see-through looks increased by 40 and 53 percent, respectively, for Fall/Winter 2022, Warin says, and 77 percent of designers featured see-through looks for Spring/Summer 2023. Appearances of skin-protecting pieces in menswear reveal fashion increased 504 percent in spring/summer 2023 compared to spring/summer 2022.
A decent organization? don’t worry “For 2023, we will continue to see a progressive shift away from overt sexuality and show longer hemlines, elegant tailoring and less skin,” claims Gramston.

In particular, according to Maggioni, the tailor-made emerges after being one of the “most affected categories” during the pandemic. “While work patterns are certainly more hybrid than they used to be and the relaxation of career wear continues, a more unified aesthetic is generally emerging as consumers seek a new direction,” she says.
As for hemlines, Hsu may see maxi skirts next year, but long dresses have dominated recent shows (81 percent of designers have included long dresses in their collections, Tagwalk reports).
Obsession with the not-so-distant past isn’t going anywhere. Moizant puts it simply: “Nostalgia for the ’90s and 2000s will remain.” It might look a little different—”the more psychedelic end of the boho look is key,” says Maggioni—but it’s the same vibe we’ve known for seasons now.

The best way to buy into nostalgia is to do it authentically. Get vintage finds from fellow hustlers at Depop, Vinted, eBay and more, or check out Vestiaire Collective, Hardly Ever Worn It and 1stDibs to discover exclusive designer treasures. Anthony Barzilay Friend, editorial director and trend expert at 1stDibs, advises John Galliano for Dior, Tom Ford for Gucci, Vivienne Westwood and Issey Miyake to look for. On the accessories front, think ’90s Chanel bags and Fendi’s beloved baguette (which celebrated its 25th anniversary this year) as the ultimate trophy pieces.
