The University of Southern Tennessee, formally known as Martin Methodist College, was originally named for Thomas Martin, who donated $30,000 in his will in 1870 to open a girls’ school in Giles County. The university is restoring the historic house, now known as Herbert and Grace Gleason Colonial Hall, using as much of the original materials from the older building as possible.
