Much of the central region of the country falls within “equal opportunity” zones. This basically means that the average, above-average or below-average rainfall is about the same.

The southern half of the United States, including Arizona, New Mexico and the mid-Atlantic region, is in the “high probability” zone. This means there is a higher chance of above-average rainfall.

But remember that 3-6 month forecasts are of little or no value. So don’t get too excited or embarrassed about where your favorite ski area falls on this map.

A strong El Niño or La Niña (which refers to ocean temperatures in the central Pacific) can help predict winter snowfall patterns.

El Niño is expected to appear in the upcoming 2023-2024 winter season, and even better, current sea surface temperatures show that the El Niño phenomenon is strengthening.

In the chart above, there is a greater than 90% chance that water temperatures will remain above average (red bar = El Niño), and there is a less than 5% chance that water temperatures will remain near average (grey bars = neutral).

The projections of the official Climate Prediction Center are also similar to these model predictions. The CPC suggests a greater than 95% chance that El Niño will persist from December 2023 to February 2024.

A first look at the 2023/2024 winter forecast shows the clear impact of the new El Niño phenomenon. There is a marked change in the jet stream pattern compared to last year. A new trend of dynamic weather patterns is emerging in the central and eastern United States and northern Europe.

The Earth’s weather system is complex, with large and small factors affecting climate. Increasing El Niño events will be a major driver of the 2023/2024 Northern Hemisphere winter season.

First, let’s take a quick look at the El Niño region, analyze recent ocean anomalies, and look at past El Niño events and this winter’s weather. We will combine and compare this data with the latest long-term forecasts to see how much of an impact this El Niño event will have on the 2023/24 winter season.

The ocean covers more than 70% of the Earth’s surface and plays an important role in the Earth’s climate system. In the image below you can see how the ocean and atmosphere interact. It’s quite complex, but you can see a lot of big and small factors at both levels.

And it’s important to understand that this system works both ways. For example, we sometimes look at how extreme weather events affect long-term weather, and weather also affects extreme weather events.

Tropical trade winds are an important link between the ocean and weather. They can mix sea surface layers and change sea surface currents and temperatures. This can lead to changes in precipitation, pressure distribution and feedbacks on meteorological conditions.

Official Winter Outlook

So what are trade winds? Trade winds are constant and permanent and blow toward (or across) the equator in both hemispheres. The image below shows the prevailing global winds. Trade winds are shown in yellow and red.

Depending on their intensity and direction, strong temperature anomalies can occur at sea levels near the equator.

Therefore, it is important to remember that while the ocean may play a direct role in climate, it also changes with weather conditions.

Many marine areas around the world are important in one way or another. We may experience anomalies in the ocean on a monthly, seasonal or multi-decade basis. Because they can be used as indicator lights on your car’s dashboard, they can sometimes give you a glimpse of what’s to come.

Looking at the latest global weather anomalies, we’ve highlighted three regions where we’re monitoring conditions for winter 2023/2024. Each has a role and importance within different domains and time scales.

At its center is El Niño Southern Oscillation, or ENSO. This is one of the best-known ocean oscillations, with particularly strong effects during the winter months. We are currently in a warm (El Nino) phase.

What Can We Expect This Winter 2022 2023

At the top right is an unusually warm North Atlantic, while at top center is a strong warm anomaly over the North Pacific.

We will briefly discuss ENSO, the main influence region during winter. Let’s take a look at the current developments and predictions. But we will also look at the historical structure associated with this anomaly and what it can tell us for the winter of 2023/2024.

ENSO stands for “El Niño Southern Oscillation.” This region of the equatorial Pacific experiences alternating warm and cold phases. Phase changes typically occur every 1 to 3 years.

ENSO has important impacts on tropical precipitation, pressure patterns, and complex ocean-atmosphere exchanges. If there is a slight delay, these changes will affect circulation around the world.

The image below from NOAA Climate shows the typical circulation during an El Niño event, which will be the dominant phase until spring 2024.

During El Niño periods, rising air over the eastern Pacific causes more storms and precipitation, reducing pressure in the region. At the same time, the air in the western Pacific is sinking, stabilizing the weather and forming a high pressure system.

In this way, El Niño has a major impact on tropical rainfall and pressure patterns, influencing the ocean-atmosphere feedback system. Thanks to these ocean-atmosphere systems, ENSO’s influence spreads around the world.

Below you can find the latest surface analysis for the tropical Pacific. We can see the distinct warm anomalies of the El Niño phenomenon starting in the eastern tropical Pacific and spreading westward.

El Niño occurs when the trade winds are weak, and this tells us a lot about global circulation. We can therefore use these weather anomalies as “indicators” to know the current state of the Earth’s climate system.

Tenaciousness Of Winter:’ Weather Network Forecasts A Delayed Spring

Below you can see the last two years of weather anomalies in the ENSO region. In 2022, a third La Niña phenomenon may occur and sea temperatures may rise sharply, causing an active El Niño phenomenon.

Below is an analysis/forecast chart prepared by ECMWF showing the long-term forecast for the major ENSO regions. The ECMWF forecast average predicts an abnormal rise of more than 2 degrees in mid-winter during what is considered a strong El Niño event. The stronger the event, the stronger the seasonal weather effects.

ECMWF’s Winter 2023/24 Ocean Outlook shows a strong El Niño event spreading across the tropical Pacific. An event of this magnitude is powerful enough to cause profound global atmospheric reactions. In the Northern Hemisphere, stronger impacts are expected in winter.

Typically, the first effects of these weather anomalies are seen in changes to the jet stream. The jet stream is a large, powerful air current (wind) at an altitude of about 8 to 11 km (5 to 7 miles).

It flows from west to east across the Northern Hemisphere, interacting with pressure systems and forming surface weather.

Below is an example of the winter jet stream that occurs in winter at an altitude of approximately 9 km/5.6 miles. You can see the jet stream bending toward the central United States. It curves upward over northwestern Europe. Such a formation would bring colder air to the eastern United States.
